Family Cycling Holidays

Cycling, as we know, is not just reserved for the super-fit elite. A huge part of our tours is based around the exploration of foreign lands and the enjoyment of a journey orientated two-wheeled freedom. In light of this, our cycling holidays for families have been specifically designed with the younger ones in mind and cater to both their inherent love of the outdoors and natural sense of adventure.

Shorter daily stages follow cycle paths or the quietest of roads and ensure the highest level of safety when it comes to family cycling. Skirting the rolling Berici Hills of Vincenza or the fertile farmlands of Touraine, both Italy and France are home to some of Europe’s most beautiful and popular cycle routes. Whilst simplicity and scenery are high up on the agenda of our family cycling holidays, each tour provides something a little different, directed specifically towards the individual interests of your children. For those interested in history, our family cycling holiday in France is a ‘fairy-tale freewheel’ amongst the Castles of the Loire Valley. It also has the benefit of only 2 hotel changes, between the Amboise and Chitenay hotels, both of which have family friendly swimming pools. In contrast, our Lake Garda tour in Italy takes you to one of Europe’s top theme parks, Gardaland, offering dozens of rides and attractions. Alternatively, Peschiera, where Gardaland is famously situated, also houses the Sealife Aquarium or Canevaworld Aquapark.

Whatever your interests, family cycling holidays are fast becoming a sought after alternative to the traditional family holidays of the past. With bikes, trailers and accessories for hire, catering along the routes designed for kids of all ages, luggage transfer arranged between accommodations and triple or quad rooms available wherever possible, convenience and cost have been objectively considered on each of our popular tours. Waging a war on cars?

The Wiggins effect or ever-increasing fuel prices? Whatever the reason, recent reports suggest that bikes are out-selling cars with 3.6 million bikes being sold in 2012, compared to 2 million of it’s four-wheeled competitor. Call it inspiration following the success of our British Cycling teams or a desire to seek a healthier lifestyle, even to cut commuting costs, the UK is fast becoming the most enthusiastic cycling nation in Europe.

More cash is being invested by the Government to improve infrastructure and to make roads safer for cyclists. Further reports from the Governments National Travel Survey, show people are looking to cut costs for shorter journeys, collecting the kids from school or a quick pop to the local shop for milk. With increasing household budgets, city congestion and parking charges and people looking for a cheaper and healthier mode of transport, the people of the UK are depending less on cars and it’s easy to see the reasons why.

Nine Million and counting….

Cycling Popularity in the UK

Following a recent report by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc. (SMS Inc.), almost 9 million of us Brits have taken to pedal power. According to this exciting research, 17% of us are cycling, on average, 50 times a year with a fifth of those, at least once per week.

Now, if we have indeed done our math correctly here, that means cycling is currently the UK’s 3rd most popular sport, just behind running and swimming. Statistics show, if this rapid growth continues, it could well reach the top spot! Here’s hoping…

Interestingly, road cycling makes up 80% of the form of this sport, the most common reason being for recreational purposes.

Considering these fascinating figures, we say it’s time to hit those pedals and enjoy the many benefits of a cycling holiday!
